The Sweetest Thing: The Blackburn Brothers Duet Book 1 Page 17

“Pretty soon I’ll have a girlfriend. There’s a lady in four-oh-eight. Gladys. She keeps making eyes at me. Tries to get me to partner up with her at craft time.”

“Seems like the love-bug has been biting a lot of people recently.” Scotty motioned over to Linda and her new boyfriend. He’d only been around a few months, but he was great with Mason and smitten with Linda. Scotty’s mom, Eileen had also started seeing someone recently and though this was his first family brunch, he’d already met most of the family.

Nathan appeared at Scotty’s side a minute later, he tugged a chair closer and slid in next to him. He made a face at little Mason, who cooed and babbled happily, animal cracker going everywhere. With one meaty hand Mason scrubbed at his eye.

  “Uh oh. Someone looks tired.”

“Don’t look at me. I just had a nap,” Reggie joked, and he motioned toward Linda, who spotted her tired tyke from across the deck. She came over and collected him. She spared a moment to thank Reggie for sitting with him, but Mason quickly made his exhaustion known and Linda whisked him away upstairs to lay him down.

Scotty kept his chair until everyone started to eat. Then, he slid onto Nathan’s lap and forfeited his seat to Linda. Nathan took full advantage of having Scotty in his lap. He snuck kisses and fed him little bites of food.

“You never let me sit in your lap,” Tod joked as he leaned against the railing. Since Nathan had moved back, he’d made a point to carve time out to spend with his best friend. Tod even spent time with them at the house when he could.

“Not my fault he’s prettier than you.” Nathan kissed Scotty and a blush swept across his cheeks.

Scotty leaned against Nathan. As much as he loved his family, he couldn’t wait to be home alone with his boyfriend.

“You ready to leave?” Nathan asked, his fingers teasing up Scotty’s leg.

“Mmm. Yeah. Not yet, though, but soon.” Scotty relaxed against Nathan and soaked in the tranquility. For now, everything was perfect and however long it lasted, Scotty was determined to enjoy it.
